What is ocular inflammation?

Ocular inflammation, often called uveitis can cause a severe loss of vision and requires a particular expertise in the diagnosis and management of rheumatic diseases particularly if ocular surgery will be required. First, it is important to determine if the inflammation only affects the eye or also involves the rest of the body. This is usually achieved with a careful history and investigations with include blood tests. Treatment is aimed at restoring vision, maintaining visual gains while minimizing systemic and local side effects. This is particularly important, as many uveitis patients will require long term therapy.
